Stan Smith

This is my second attempt to do a watercolor painting of this new people subject matter. I have decided to call this group of paintings “People and Figures”. We are setting up a section on my web site for this group. I had originally thought to name this group “Portrait Paintings”, however what I have in mind is not really portrait paintings, but rather paintings of people doing something. I do plan to also try to do portraits, from time to time, when the mood seems right.

In the middle of last month, I had the pleasure of being with my friends in the Geriatric Art Society (GAS) on our annual fall painting trip. This year we went to St. Francisville, Louisiana and stayed in the Bed and Breakfast, St. Francisville Inn.

A few days ago, I was looking through the photographs that I took while there trying to find something suitable for a painting, when I happened to notice in the far background of one of the photographs this scene of Stan Smith concentrating on doing a watercolor painting. It appeared that most, if not all, of the design elements were there, although the image was very small. So I decided to give it a try. I kind of like the way it turned out.

Stan, who is on the email list that receives the images of my new paintings and their stories, does not know that I have done this painting of him. It has been hard to keep this a secret. I was in a meeting with him yesterday and sat next to him. We both serve on the Board of Directors of the Watercolor Art Society – Houston and our monthly Board meeting was yesterday morning. I was sure tempted to drop a hint or something, but I did keep my mouth shut…for once.

I hope Stan and all of you like it.
